North West Province
The North West Province of South Africa is a fantastic place to visit for just about any activity the traveller through Africa will want to do. Most notable however, are the adventure holidays that the province has become famed for.
With white water rafting, canoeing, diving, hiking and most other adventure sports available, no other place in South Africa can give you the satisfaction that doing them here can. One of the best things are the air adventures; sights of incredible beauty such as the Magalies River Valley, the Hartbeespoort Dam, Magaliesberg Mountain Range and the Pilanesberg National Park are breathtaking, and something you will remember for the rest of your life. Especially worth a mention are the paragliding and hang-gliding, which the mountains provide a perfect backdrop for.
Bird watching and gaming are also excellent here, with the Big Five in plenty of evidence, as well as cheetah, antelope and hundreds of bird species. With twelve national parks and game reserves, there are plenty of places to visit, and game drives and walks are a popular activity.
For anglers, the Bloemhof Dam is one of the most popular fishing sites in the world, and the Vaalkop Dam has carp and yellowfish in plentiful supply.
Hiking through the mountains is also wonderful, with a variety of extremely good trails to try, and accompanying rock climbing making it even better for those looking for a bit of adventure. With big, wild and often very remote cliffs and rock faces, it is a climber's dream and one of the most fantastic places to climb in the open in the world.
Water sports are also an extremely popular pastime, with everything from windsurfing to jet skiing, body boarding to white water rafting; the dams and rivers are incredibly clear, surrounded by beautiful scenery and amazing skies that will make you feel like you are stepping back to the very basics, and forgetting about the business of everyday life.
If adventure sports are your kind of thing, also have a look at the Cape Winelands; the area offers a similar experience but has the added benefit of a wine-tasting route - brilliant fun touring the country and stopping every now and then to taste various top-class glasses of wine!
The adventure capital of Africa is easily accessed from South Africa; Victoria Falls is world renowned for its extreme sports, scenery and wildlife.
